Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) Events

This section compares SSW onset dates across three different definitions. Even when dates vary slightly due to atmospheric lag, they often represent the same physical event. U5570_11M: Zonal-mean zonal wind reversals at any latitude between 55-70N and 10 hPa. Final warmings events occurring earlier than 11 March are considered as SSWs because they share similar dynamical impacts Palmeiro et al., 2017 U65 and U60 correspond to the traditional definition in Charlton and Polvani, 2007 but using 65 N or 60 N respectively.

The following figures show the PC-index a similar metric to the Northern Annular Mode (NAM), but calculates as zonal-mean geopotential height anomalies over the polar cap and standarized at each pressure level.
